Compliance is the business and legal term for the adherence to rules (also rule conformity) of companies, i.e., adherence to laws, guidelines, and voluntary codes. Compliance requirements in IT mainly include information security, availability, data retention and data protection. Companies are subject to numerous legal obligations, non-compliance with which can lead to heavy fines and liability. EU directives, international conventions, internal company conventions and trade customs add further rules.
